Richard and Ann Johnson
From Student Leader to Philanthropic Leader

As an engineering student at Ohio State, Richard (Dick) Johnson was an active leader. He served as University homecoming chairman and president of Ohio Staters, Inc. In that role, he was in charge of the student body trip to the 1958 Rose Bowl, which he considers to be the highlight of his college career. He was elected to the three class honoraries: Romophos, Bucket and Dipper, and Sphinx. After a tour of duty as an officer in the Air Force, he received his MBA degree in 1962.

Dick credits his success to his time at Ohio State. "The education I received in both Engineering and Business, along with campus leadership activities, provided me with an excellent foundation for a professional career in management consulting," he said. His principal career was in the consulting practice of Andersen Consulting, now Accenture. After retirement, he co-founded a consulting firm, VIA International, and served as its chairman.

Since graduation, Dick has remained devoted to his alma mater. His involvement through the years has been extensive and includes the Alumni Advisory Council and the Alumni Association Board of Directors, which he served as vice chair. He has also served as chair and vice chair of the President's Club Advisory Board. During the Affirm Thy Friendship Campaign he served on the Chicago National Major Gifts Committee. He also held two advisory roles for the College of Engineering. In addition, he served as co-chair of Development and a member of the Stewardship Council leading to establishment of the Ruth Weimer Mount Leadership Society.

Dick also has served Fisher College of Business in a variety of capacities, including two separate terms on the Dean's Advisory Council and member of the national campaign committees for the Affirm Thy Friendship and But for Ohio State campaigns, as well as leading several projects.

Dick has been recognized for his service as the recipient of the Alumni Citizenship Award, the Gerlach Development Volunteer Award, Fisher College of Business Distinguished Alumni Award, and the University Distinguished Service Award.

Dick and his wife, Ann, a graduate of Oregon State University, are strong supporters of Ohio State. Among others they have made substantial contributions to Fisher College of Business, the Ruth Weimer Mount Leadership Endowment fund, the Ohio Staters, Inc. rooms in the new Union, and they funded a Leadership Endowment scholarship fund for a graduate of the Mount Leadership Society. Most recently, they made a commitment for an estate gift to Fisher College of Business to help fund international programs. "But for Ohio State, I would not have been the first-generation college student in my family," Dick said. "It is my great privilege to support Ohio State's future contributions to its students and the world."
