"Beloit College has brought the Buell family many blessings," said Betty Buell Healy's daughter, Grace Healy Shields'70, speaking to this year's Heritage luncheon guests. "Beloit Buell graduates include teachers, scientists, businessmen and women, and community servants," she said. "At Beloit, many of us met our future spouses and made life-long friends, and the college also helped us uncover our passions."
President Scott Bierman, speaking at the luncheon, explained how the Buell family connection to the college started in the earliest days of the campus, when the extended family settled in neighboring Walworth County and sent the first of many Buells to the young college. Ira M. Buell graduated in 1878; his first cousin Ralph Buell graduated in 1901; Ralph sent three of his children to Beloit, including Betty, and the cascade of relationships continues for two more generations of Beloit graduates.
"What a legacy," Scott proclaimed. "What a remarkable statement about Betty's trust in the college and love of its history." The Buell-Beloit story, he continued, "is a love story of the ages and for the ages. This is a story that is worthy of appreciation from everyone in this room and the 500 or so Heritage Society members who can not be here."
