Sample Wording for Various Bequests

Why Have a Will?
If you wish to determine who inherits your assets and property, it is important to have a written will. It is also important to plan your will in consultation with an attorney.

Sample Wording
Sample wording for a residuary bequest (that is, a gift made after all other heirs are remembered and all expenses and debts are paid) could include:

"All the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, I give, devise and bequeath to the MedStar Washington Hospital Center Foundation, legally known as WHC Foundation 1, located at 110 Irving Street, NW, Washington, DC 20010; federal tax identification number 52-1272129."

Sample wording for a specific bequest could include:
"I give, devise and bequeath to the MedStar Washington Hospital Center Foundation, legally known as WHC Foundation 1, located at 110 Irving Street, NW, Washington, D.C. 20010, Federal tax identification number 52-1272129, the sum of __________________________________ dollars ($__________)."

Sample wording for a percentage bequest could include:
"I give, devise and bequeath to the Washington Hospital Center Foundation, legally known as WHC Foundation 1, located at 110 Irving Street, NW, Washington, D.C. 20010, Federal tax identification number 52-1272129, an amount equal to _____________ percent (_______%) of the net value of my estate as finally determined for Federal estate tax purposes."

Is a Specific Designation Possible?
If you wish to direct your bequest to a specific Hospital Center program such as, for example, the Washington Heart Institute, the Washington Cancer Institute or the Needy Sick Fund, you may do so. Please explain such intentions when consulting with your estate planning attorney.

Tydings Society
The Tydings Society recognizes those individuals who include Washington Hospital Center in their estate plan through a bequest, charitable gift annuity, life insurance and/or charitable trusts.

Members are presented on the distinctive recognition plaque that is located in the Main Lobby of the Hospital Center, and are invited to a Tydings Society reception held each year to recognize and to celebrate the thoughtfulness and philanthropy of Tydings Society members.

The Tydings Society is named in honor of Maryland Senator Millard E. Tydings who sponsored the legislation to create Washington Hospital Center in 1958.

Can I Change My Will?
If you already have a written will and wish to make changes, you can do so with a "codicil." A codicil is simply a written amendment to your will.
