David and Amarylis Fain

The Many Rewards of the Y

For David and Amarylis Fain, giving back is a way of life.

The husband-and-wife team brings this attitude to their roles as volunteers serving on the Y board, with David as chairman. They also volunteer in the Step Up for Kids campaign.

For David, that labor of love is just a way of repaying a debt. He grew up in south Dallas and remembers playing sports at the Oak Cliff YMCA with his brothers. It wasn't until he was older that he realized his participation at the Y had been underwritten by donors.

"Knowing that we had the opportunity as youths to be offered that program, I wanted as an adult to provide scholarships for kids in the community," David says.

Now, the Fains are at the Y almost every day.

David is a marathon runner and Amarylis participates in the Lose It for Life program. They love the friendly atmosphere and building friendships with other members. But maybe most important, they enjoy the opportunity to give back.

"We feel a real responsibility to our community to be socially responsible in our family. Knowing that a lot of kids would never get any type of experience, be it a swim lesson, day camp or summer camp—allowing those kids to have that experience is rewarding," David says.

Says Amarylis, "It helps that we know we're helping somebody else that's less fortunate."
