In 1875, James S. Seymour, well known for his philanthropy and President of the Bank of Auburn, made a bequest of $30,000 to be held in trust for the building of a hospital. By 1878 his executors completed the legal act of incorporation and Auburn City Hospital, now Auburn Memorial Hospital, was founded.
