Douglas (Doug) Laity, son of Richland residents Walt and Wilma Laity, enrolled in Columbia Basin College at an unusual stage in his academic studies, i.e., after he had been awarded a Master of Philosophy degree by the University of Cambridge. Dean and Helen Mitchell

If you've lived in the Tri-Cities in the last 60 years, you know KONA! KONA radio has been a major voice of the community since the 1950s. Dean Mitchell started as a newsperson for the station in 1957 and took ownership in 1978. He and his wife Helen have a great appreciation for the value of small businesses owned by those with roots in the community. More

Helen and Charlie Cox

Helen Cox should have had an inkling of what kind of life was ahead of her when her young man proposed she sell her '47 Dodge to buy a service station. He'd already sold his, and with the money from her car, her fiancé was able to buy the gas station at the corner of Fourth and Lewis in Pasco in 1951. He then had to borrow $50 to fill the cash register. More

Buck and Jessie Poteete

A long-time friend of Eugene "Buck" Poteete remembered him as a guy who drove around in beat-up picks bought at government surplus sales. After moving to Benton City in 1947, Buck and his wife Jessie earned most of their money buying and selling local real estate. More
