first member of a Greek organization (Sigma Phi
Epsilon) to be elected as student body president at the
University of Georgia. Bill credits his participation in the
UGA debate program representing the university in more

team. Married in 1938, and following his naval
service on the USS Saratoga during World
War II, Marey Carey accompanied Irv to the University of
